Factors related to hospitalized victims of traffic accidents admitted at the emergency room of Hospital das Clinicas, FMUSP

Abstract

Traumas related to external causes of morbidity and mortality are one of the biggest challenges of the SUS welfare health units because of the gravity and complexity of the lesions. Among these, are the ones produced by traffic accidents (ICD: VO1-V70). Effective prevention programs must act on their main causes and related factors. One strategy that may be useful for the elaboration of such programs is: assess the factors associated with traffic accidents and transportation of victims with severe injuries who remain hospitalized. Therefore, we aim to evaluate all the hospitalized victims admitted at Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP within one year. The objectives of the project are: identify the main factors related to each traffic accident, such as demographic data, historical and reported infractions, previous accidents, type of victim, reminiscent use of psychoactive substances by the victim at the time of the accident, and the accident conditions. In addition to that, it will be performed a toxicological analysis on blood samples to verify the use of psychoactive substances. It will also be assessed the severity indexes by RTS (hospitalization), AIS (abbreviated severity index), and ISS (injury severity score), and the resulting disability a month after the accident (Functional Independence Measure - FIM). The data will be collected on emergency (RTS and blood sample) and inpatient (interview and ISS) units. The degree of functionality will be evaluated 30 days after the occurrence. If the patient is discharged, the evaluation will be done either by a telephone conversation or a face-to-face interview (outpatient return). In cases of no discharge, the interview will be made at the place of hospitalization. The main goal is to verify the existence of a correlation between psychoactive substances and more severe and disabling injuries. (AU)
