Abstract

Novel methodologies and innovative approaches have evolved over the past years to develop a theoretical framework capable of accurate predictions of cleavage fracture behavior in different cracked bodies by unifying toughness measures across different crack configurations and loading modes. A consensus has emerged in favor of micro mechanics models based upon a probabilistic interpretation of the cleavage fracture process, which are most often referred to as local approaches (LA), to describe material failure caused by transgranular cleavage for a wide range of loading conditions and crack configurations. This research project seeks to promote and establish a long term international cooperation between the Fracture Mechanics and Structural: Integrity Research Group (NAMEF) of the Engineering School at University of São Paulo (Escola Politécnica - USP) and the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at University of Manchester (UoM) to bring together complementary expertise in experimental and theoretical fracture mechanics for the advance of specific knowledge in the area of local approach methods with novel extensions to their conventional model incorporating effects of plastic strains, including a line of investigation to address more efficient computational and parameter calibration procedures.
