The air is fundamental to the life of the significant majority of living organisms, including man. Air quality thus reflects in health and quality of life, and when compromised or overloaded with pollutants it can cause damage to fauna, flora and materials. Atmospheric pollutants, often imperceptible to the naked eye, favor the development of respiratory tract diseases, such as asthma, bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema and lung cancer, and in the cardiovascular system, with children, the elderly and people that already suffer from respiratory diseases, the most vulnerable ones. Given the importance of air quality to life, it's monitoring and control is a critical point in urban planning for management in both public and private spheres. In this perspective, the QUALAR (Air Quality Program) program stands out developed by Companhia Ambiental do Estado de São Paulo - CETESB, based on a network of automatic stations providing public information on the air quality in various municipalities. This initiative transcribes how it is possible to acquire environmental data and thus provide the information to the public, assisting in public / private research and decisions of urban strategic planning. The action of providing openly information to the population through mechanisms capable of capturing, treating, disseminating and using this information as a basis for decision-making represent in part the concept of "Intelligent Cities", being defined as the use of Information Technologies and Communication to verify, analyze and integrate key information from central systems in cities. The present project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of the implementation of a sensors network for the monitoring of air quality, whose information will be processed through the application of the geostatistical method of Krigagem and will be available by a real time system on the web to end users. It will be analyzed, processed and made available information on relevant environmental variables to the analysis of air quality, such as wind speed, temperature, relative air humidity, carbon dioxide and particulate matter, as well as UV index and rainfall. The Arduino® microcontroller will be used to interconnect the sensors to obtain the values of the environmental variables, thus constituting the monitoring nodes. The choice of this platform is justified by its low cost and for being based on open source software. Communication between the monitoring nodes will be done through a wireless network using the ZigBee protocol, which is characterized as a low power consumption, low cost and high reliability telemetry system. With the implementation of this project, it is expected a small-scale monitoring system to provide reliable and accurate data on air quality. In order to do so, the temporal constraints are indispensable to the execution of the project, which implies in the need to develop a real time system based on the geostatistical method Krigagem, used to generate maps that enable the visualization and interpretation of the information.
