Abstract
Regular physical exercise is now recognized as a proper practice for maintaining health or rehabilitation of diseases. But the literature still has large gaps with regard to physical exercise in environments with high air pollution. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effects of air pollution on sedentary and street runners in different weather conditions, in the winter season with high levels of pollution, and summer rainy season with lower pollution levels. Inflammatory responses in peripheral blood and nasal lavage, oxidative stress in peripheral blood and in the exhaled air condensate and lung injury in peripheral blood and nasal lavage will be compared. The integrity of the upper airway is assessed by the saccharin transport test, and differential cell count, which will be compared to the peripheral blood. (AU)
