Abstract

Multiple benefits can be expected from the visiting fellowship of Dr. Hartmann. Not only scientific excellence and the submissions of three articles to leading scientific journals, but also mutual capability development, new initiatives in terms of teaching, and new collaborative projects in Sao Paulo are envisaged. Drawing on his research experience at leading global research institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Fraunhofer IMW, as well as his experience in applied local development projects in Peru and Brazil, Dr. Hartmann brings the passion and demand of producing excellent research that not only can be published in A journals, but that also matter for applied policies and the wider public. His articles on inequality have been quoted and led to consultancy invitations by global organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, the OECD and the United Nations, as well as newspapers like the MIT Tech News and the Financial Times. His work on international innovation networks has led to attention by the regional governments of Baden-Württemberg, multiple civil society organizations and leading newspapers in Germany and Turkey. His software package on diversity measurement has been started to be applied by graduate and postgraduate students from leading global research institutions. Therefore, the main purpose of this research stay in Sao Carlos is to develop, during his visiting fellowship, a larger collaborative research project on smart, sustainable and inclusive growth in Brazil, which involves leading researchers from the best universities of Brazil and draws on the expertise of this large international contact network. Moreover, to produce three high quality and high impact papers that are able to access A journals and are highly relevant for policy making and the civil society. These topics (human development, health and foreign direct investment) are extremely relevant for policy-makers, science and the civil society alike. Using new cutting-edge methods in data visualization, network science, diversity measurement and scientific storytelling allows for the creation of new scientific insights, while at the same time making science more accessible to the wider public. During the fellowship, we will collect data and visualize it in a manner that draws on graphic design principles. This facilitate both scientific progress and disseminating and discussing the results with the politicians, company managers, scientists and the civil society. (AU)
