Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) will be composed of billions of interconnected devices capable of sensing, communicating and acting. The data volume coming from these devices will challenge the current data management strategies and will contribute to the evolvement of Big Data technologies. This Project aims to establish IoT as a research area at the DC-UFSCar by initially setting up an IoT research infrastructure including the three main layers of the IoT architecture: sensing, communication and intelligence (applications). Other components which are part of the research area include a middleware platform for IoT, BigData analytics and implementations, IoT applications, AIDC (Automated Identification and Data Capture), data transport, communication protocols and standards, data security, communication technologies and context analysis to name a few. The initial phase of this project which should last a couple of years, will structure an environment for IoT research including an open source IoT middleware with Big Data support, a collection of remote sensing devices (motes) communicating over LoRa (Long Range Low Power Wide Private Area Network) which can work in a radius up to 20 km, an emerging communication technology for IoT, as well as, other LPWAN technologies. During the initial phase, we will resort to an open source IoT middleware, which can be modified to support specific needs, such as add support to LoRa. For technology training purposes and research, we will develop a few IoT applications in order to exercise the research environment and prove the feasibility of the platform for different application areas: (i) a remote temperature monitoring application using the IoT platform; (ii) a lighting monitoring application for the context of smartcity; and (iii) a remote micro climate station for agriculture and environment applications. Through this research in IoT project, we expect to gain knowledge and be able to explore many of the involved technologies in different research projects which will eventually happen at the DC-UFSCar as well as be able to support government and community initiatives in IoT in SmartCities, SmartHealth, SmartEnergy and other IoT areas of applications which are going to happen in the near future. This project will eventually become a research center for the Future Internet. (AU)
