Abstract

In the sedimentary plateau (Western of Minas Gerais), the pedological cover is constituted by Ferralsol - Gleysol. The well drained Ferralsols are located in upslope, and the Gleysols are present in the hydromorphic topographic depressions, which are influenced by high groundwater level. That areas concentrate highly aluminous clays used as refractory material. The enrichment of alumina and its distribution seems to be dependent on the degree of hydromorphy and concentration of organic matter in the Gleissolos. The research project aims: (1) to map the levels of hydromorphy and soil organic matter concentration as a base to assess the genesis and aluminum enrichment in the clays; (2) to characterize organic substances and organo-metallic interaction in hydromorphic soils to evaluate the role of organic matter in increasing aluminous concentration; and (3) to apply geophysical methods to map saprolite depth, water table level, and aluminum enrichment as a subsidy for mineral exploration. The acquired scientific advances are fully applicable to the needs and challenges inherent to the research area and aim the increase of sustainability of the mining exploration as well as the reduction of environmental impacts in the humid areas of the Cerrado.
