This proposal is concerned with the investigation of plasmonic metal nanoparticles (NPs) supported on semiconductors and its applications in photocatalysis, especially hydrogen generation by water splitting. We aim to kick-start this new collaboration by combining the acknowledged synthesis capability of Dr. Pedro Camargo group on shape and size controlled metal nanoparticles with the catalysis testing and characterization capabilities of Prof. Tsang group, in order to address the use of plasmonic metal nanoparticles supported on semiconductors in photocatalysis. Dr. Pedro Camargo group has developed routes of synthesis for metal nanoparticles with new shapes, controlling size and composition, and have the experience and infrastructure to synthesize a range of metal nanoparticles shapes with controlled properties. The Wolfson Catalysis Centre has access to advanced instrument for testing/mechanism investigation (photoreactors coupled to gas chromatography, in-situ infrared and XRD, etc) and characterization (Atom probe, high resolution has, etc) at Oxford.
