Abstract
From 2011 to 2013 FAPESP supported my work on Der Vollkommene Capellmeister [ "The Perfect Master-of-Chapel", 1739] by Johann Mattheson - the most extensive and important treatise within the Institutio musica poetica. There we sought to show the ways in which Mattheson accomplishes an emulation of classical rhetorics in his work. The present project constitutes a deepening of this research, since it was not possible to exhaust such a portentous theme. It was possible to establish an overview, which will base and direct specific cuts of work. The specific objective of this project is to deepen the understanding of the rhetorical structure of inventio (the first part of the musical discourse), so as to encompass a detailed confrontation of Mattheson's text with Latin Rhetorics (partially accomplished) and the sources presented by Mattheson himself as his direct references in Der vollkommene Capellmeister. We will also provide the first portuguese translation of the chapter dedicated to inventio (II, 4) in Der vollkommene Capellmeister, making this important primary source available for portuguese readers who are not fluent in German.
