Bone dynamic depends on interactions between neural, endocrine, paracrine and autocrine components. The activities of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes are modulated by intra and extra-bone factors. Ovarian steroid hormones and adipokines synthesized and released by adipose tissue are important extra-bone factors. The effects of progestins, androgens, estrogens and leptin on bone dynamic are not fully understood. Endocrine/metabolic diseases induce significant changes in metabolism. Ovarian endocrine disorders can induce changes in plasma levels of ovarian steroids and promote changes in the dynamics between the bone and fat tissues. The Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an example of metabolic endocrine disease that affects thousands of women around the world and it is an interesting model for understanding the crosstalk between these tissues. Osteoporosis is an important bone change observed in PCOS women. The use of techniques such as low-level laser therapy and mesenchymal stem cells have been widely proposed mainly for functional events related to tissue repair; however, the functional mechanisms activated and/or inhibited by such techniques are not yet completely understood. The purpose of this project is to study, in vitro and in vivo, the effects of laser therapy and cell therapy on bone dynamics in a model of rats induced to SOP. The use of these therapies to the in vivo animal models and in vitro cellular assays can develop interesting tools for understanding the basic and clinical functional events relating PCOS and bone dynamics.
