Feasibility study of the Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) as an adjunct to the outpatient treatment of substance use disorders

Abstract

Substance use disorder (SUD) has an impact on various spheres of life of the individual and society, and it is considered a major global public health problem. The Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) protocol is an innovative intervention in the United States, presenting many benefits to people with SUD including reduced drug consumption and days of use. However, there's a lack of Brazilian studies specially within treatment settings offered to this population. The Drug and Alcohol Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS ad) are the Brazilian care services of reference for people with SUD, and so, to evaluate the feasibility of incorporating MBRP in these services can address this gap and may bring significant benefits for the user's treatment. Thus, this project aims to evaluate the feasibility of MBRP as adjunctive therapeutic intervention in the usual treatment in CAPS ad for people with SUD. Methods: A qualitative and quantitative study will be carried out in about 10 CAPS ad from different locations and characteristics to evaluate the following feasibility indicators: acceptance, demand, implementation and adaptation; through interviews, focus groups, field diary analysis, conducted with users and service professionals. Scales and questionnaires will also be applied with users before and after the intervention. The qualitative data analysis plan will use content analysis, and quantitative data will use descriptive analysis for sample characterization, besides association tests, residual and correspondence analysis to trace the profile of the participants that adhered.
