Multi-user equipament approved in grants 13/50181-1: Bio-Scaffold printer 3D 3axis com precisão nos eixos XYZ- 3D

Abstract

The central nervous system (CNS) is composed of astrocytes (50%), oligodendrocytes (40%), microglia (5%) and ependymal cells (5%), which provide structural and functional support to neurons. In particular glial tumors (glioma or glioblastoma) are among the most common neoplasms of the CNS and adult arise from astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and their precursors. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and aggressive of these tumors. Another serious problem that affects the CNS is called cerebrovascular accident (CVA), which is caused by reduced blood supply, resulting in decreasing the supply of oxygen and glucose in an area of the brain. A third serious problem is the presence of blood in the subarachnoid space due to subarachnoid hemorrhage, which leads to cerebral arterial vasospasm. All currently existing treatments for brain affections reported here are not very effective, resulting in a large number of patients with serious neurological compromise or death. Therefore, a need exists to develop a more effective therapy. This project is basically divided into 5 sub-projects, three of which related to glioblastoma, one related to cerebral vasospasm and other related focal cerebral ischemia. The studies proposed in this project seem very relevant, since the use of new technologies a theme already explored, but with little success, seems to be the key to the discovery of new therapeutic strategies. Therefore, the common guideline that unites all proposals is the combination of Nanotechnology, Fotoprocesso and Cell Therapy for the treatment of CNS disorders. (AU)
