Establishment of an experimental apparatus to study dipolar quantum gases

Abstract

This proposal aims to establish a research line in the experimental study of ultracold quantum gases with strong dipolar interactions, specifically studying dysprosium atoms. Dysprosium is the most magnetic atom in the periodic table and it has been shown recently that is possible to trap and cool its isotopes, both bosonic and fermionic, to quantum degeneracy. This ability has opened the possibility to study a myriad of phenomena predicted for such dipolar systems, among which we can cite: models of liquid crystals, the maxon-roton excitation spectrum, and super-solid like phases. Beyond the manifestation of such phenomena, exclusive of dipolar systems, each and every aspect of the Physics of quantum gases, extensively studied in the last 20 years, is modified, at different degrees, due to the nature of the interactions, anisotropic and long-range. This project is intended to establish a research line on ultracold quantum gases with dipolar interactions. Our specific objectives are: (i) build an experimental setup that allows us to produce ultracold quantum clouds of dysprosium and (ii) study the thermodynamic behavior of the ultracold gas compared to the theoretical predictions for non-dipolar systems; (iii) study the collective excitations of the cold cloud and their dependence on the dipolar interaction and (iv) study vortex excitation in the dipolar cloud.
