Development of practical methods to detect and monitoring resistant population of Aedes aegypti to pesticides in Brazil

Abstract

Dengue, chikungunya and zika, diseases transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, have been confirmed in several Brazilian states. Due to lack of vaccine capable of preventing all variations of these diseases, combating vector is the only method available. The application of chemicals is an important strategy for interrupting transmission. However, the continued use of some molecules belonging to the same chemical groups can result in the selection of resistant mosquito populations, preventing their control. The phenomenon of resistance has been reported for all classes of insecticides, affecting the resurgence of vector-borne diseases. In Brazil, several studies have reported the resistance of A. aegypti to insecticides in different regions, such as the Federal District, Paraná, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Sergipe, Ceará, Pernambuco and Paraiba. Identify quickly and assertively regions where the inefficiency of chemicals has not worked due to resistance is critical to the control of this vector. The development of proactive programs for resistance management through the use of kits for specific toxicological bioassays, will certainly contribute as very useful tool for this purpose. The Promip is a biotechnology company working for 10 years in the production and marketing of biological agents and research services for the detection and monitoring of resistance of agricultural pest control tactics. Thus, the company intends to adapt the expertise and know-how developed in the agricultural sector, to contribute to the mosquito management A. aegypti in different regions. To this end, this proposal aims to: 1) characterization of susceptibility of larvae and adults of a susceptible population of Aedes aegypti reference to novaluron insecticides, pyriproxyfen, temephos, deltamethrin, Bacillus thuringienis var. israelensis (Bti) and others may be used; 2) Development of practical use kits and quick to monitor the susceptibility of Aedes aegypti collected during the year (16/17), to novaluron insecticides, pyriproxyfen, temephos, deltamethrin and Bti; 3) Establishment of management strategies and quick decision making by experts from various regions of Brazil, through a computerized system. For this the Promip with the support of the Ministry of Health to act together to project collaborating in the identification of collection sites with the expectation of the project completion using the kits in epidemic regions. The expectation is that the company inaugurate a major focus with vector resistance management laboratory in control of A. aegypti, supporting the control populations with innovative services, which will contribute in proportion to the company's growth in this area too. The use of a computerized system for the areas of information management in the presence of resistant mosquito populations will also be an important innovation obtained from the implementation of this proposal.
