Small and Medium-Sized Brazilian Technology-Based Enterprises (Startups): Impact of Government Accelerators on Results and Proposal of an Acceleration Model

Abstract

Startups, fast-growing technology-based small businesses, have gained attention as they are seen as a way to leverage innovation by developing new technologies, new products and services, and new markets. However, the success rate of this type of business is low. In this context, the objective of this project will be to investigate the role of governmental accelerators of companies in the result of startups, identifying critical success factors and proposing a model of acceleration based on the results obtained. The results of the companies refer to both the financial impacts and those related to the innovation capacity of these companies. This study is justified since the process of accelerating companies is much more recent than incubation, and the topic related to private accelerators is more explored. As in Brazil, several government acceleration programs have been proposed, we want to identify the results obtained by this public investment and its return, identifying a model of success that optimizes government efforts. Regarding the method to be used, we intend to develop a descriptive study, carrying out a survey that will use as a database the companies that participated in the program "Start up Brazil", which already has 4 completed and one in progress. The use of the companies that participated in this program ensures that it has a national scope. In order to give support to the quantitative study, an exploratory study will be carried out initially, with case studies in start ups that have undergone the acceleration process, as a basis for the generation of scales for the survey questionnaires. As an expected result, it is intended to identify the different leverage processes of results of this type of companies, responsible for the generation of innovations that contribute to the economic development of the country.
