Development of Brazilian Decimetric Array (phase II)

Abstract

A radio-interferometer operating in 1,2-1,7; 2,8 and 5,6 GHGz, of high technology and low cost, called the Brazilian Decimetric Array - BDA, in under development for solar, galactic and extra galactic investigations and applications for the forecasting of space climate. The BDA project is being developed in 3 phases: Phase I: a prototype of 5 elements with antennae 4m in diameter and complete tracking system. Phase II: an array with 26 elements. Phase III: 12 additional antennae will be incorporated to the array maximum baselines of ~2.3 km to 1.2 km in the directions East-West and South, respectively. In Phase I all the sub-systems and software were developed and tested through solar observations and calibrated radio sources, the technical characteristics defines, the strategy for development and configuration of the array for the next phases, and the technology transfer was undertaken between overseas and Brazilian institutions and the training of personnel in interferometry techniques. This thematic project refers to the development of phase II: 20 elements will be added to the array, with the participation of local businesses. The 26 antennae will constitute a compact T-shaped array, with maximum baselines of 252 m in the East-West direction and 162 m in the direction of South. The operating frequencies will be 1,2-1,7; 2,8 and 5,6 GHz. In this phase, the BDA will provide a solar image every 100 meters with spatial resolution of 3 x 4 arc minutes. The resources requested correspond only to the antennae, the mechanical structure, to the front end and the reception and communication systems for the transmission of signals and control of the antennae for phase II.
