Phytochemistry study and evaluation of the schistosomicidal, cytotoxicity and leishmanicidal activities from cerrado plants

Abstract

This project intends to continue the bioassay-guide chemistry study of plant species that occur in areas of São Paulo State Cerrado, but with potential use as leishmanicidal, schistosomicidal, and cytotoxic. This study began in 2009 with the regular grant project entitled "Phytochemical study and evaluation of mutagenicity, antimutagenicity and cyclooxygenase inhibitory activity of Styrax (Styracaceae)" - FAPESP 2008/10283-1 (03/2009 - 05/2011) and then with the regular grant project "Phytochemistry study and evaluation of the cytotoxicity and lipoxygenase inhibitory activity from Cerrado plants" - FAPESP 2013/09280-6 (08/2013 - 07/2015). In this proposal, we intend to continue the studies with plant extracts from the species: Stizophyllum perforatum, Adenocalymma axillarum, Amphilophium elongatum, Fridericia florida and Fridericia craterophora, which showed previously leishmanicidal action, parallel cytotoxic activity will also be assessed. The fruits of the species Anacardium othonianum, A. humile and A. occidentale will also be investigated and the isolated alkyl-phenols will have their schistosomicidal and cytotoxic properties investigated. The extracts will be analyzed by HPLC/DAD and HPLC/MS, and the bioactive metabolites will be purified. The structural characterization of the isolated compounds will be performed using NMR experiments 1D and 2D IR, UV and MS. The main objectives of this project are identifying natural compounds with leishmanicidal and cytotoxic activity, and to evaluate the schistosomicidal properties of other alkyl-phenols. This project will also contribute to the research on natural products in progress in the laboratory GPNUF (Grupo de Pesquisa em Produtos Naturais UNIFRAN), to the human resource formation, and with the UNIFRAN M.D. & Ph.D. Program in Science (Capes, score 5).
