Biocompatible nanovectors based on hybrid lamellar materials and composites with polymers for drug release

Abstract

Nanotechnology advent opens the opportunity to modify biocompatible materials aiming the development of new and effective therapies that meet the demands of the medical field. This project targets to engender nanocarriers of synthetic or natural bioactive species using biocompatible inorganic layered materials (the layered double hydroxides and the cationic clays) and assess the potential for such hybrid systems as therapeutic devices for medical application. Systematic studies will be conducted to the isolation of hybrid systems (bioactive species/layered carrier) to increase the (photo) chemical and/or thermal stabilities of intercalated species and allow their subsequent modified release in the biological environment. In order to modify the process of release of the bioactive species and improve the biocompatibility, it will be prepared composite of hybrid materials with biodegradable polymers. The effect of these materials on the biological environment will be evaluated by "in vivo" assays aiming to collect information about their biocompatibility, toxicity and impact on organ microcirculation. The therapeutic effects of materials with potential anti -inflammatory and antioxidant activity will be assessed against the inflammatory response, integration capacity and tissue repair, through the materials implantation in tissues where lesions were surgically created in regions of interest.
