A randomized in situ study on the loss of tooth structure and tubular occlusion after erosive and abrasive challenge with different toothpastes containing desensitizing agents

Abstract

This crossover randomized in situ study will evaluate the effects of toothpastes indicated for the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity. Therefore, 300 dentin samples (3x3x1,5mm) will be made from intact human third molars and positioned on removable intraoral devices of volunteers . The 15 volunteers will receive 4 samples for erosion and abrasion. Samples will be randomly divided into 5 groups: G1-distilled water (negative control); G2 Colgate Maximum Anti-caries protection (without desensitizing agent control, 1450ppm F, monofluorophosphate of Sodium (MFP)); G3- Colgate Pro-Relief (Arginine 8%, 1450ppm F, MFP); G4 Sensodyne Repair & Protect (Novamin®5% 1426ppm F, MFP); G5- Regenerate TM (NR-5 TM 1450 F,MFP). During the use of the devices will be performed erosion cycles in which samples are immersed (6x/day for 2min) in citric acid solution of 1.0% (pH=2.3) and abrasion performed with use of electric brushes (2x / day for 5 seconds on each sample). All specimens will be evaluated in profilometry for evaluation of surface wear (n=300) and half will also be evaluated in electron microscopy environmental scanning (n=150) to evaluate the tubular occlusion both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results will be evaluated according to the most appropriate statistical test after the assessment of homogeneity and normality of the data. (AU)
