An intercontinental approach of the chromosomal evolution in the order Osteoglossiformes (Teleostei: Osteoglossomorpha). Parte II

Abstract

The order Osteoglossiformes has at least one representative in each of the southern hemisphere continents, except for Antarctica, being a unique model for the integration of chromosomal and biogeographical studies. However, chromosomal data in Osteoglossiformes are still scarce and restrict to a few species. This project will continue the previous one (FAPESP- 2014 / 23172-4), focusing on the biogeography and chromosomal evolution of Osteoglossiformes species, representing distinct intercontinental regions, with a network of international collaborators also interested in this promising approach. Specifically, in relation to Arapaimidae and Notopteridae families, our previous results highlighted a wide range of intrafamily chromosomal variation, opening space for advanced genomic and population studies, deepening the knowledge on their evolutionary interrelationships. Thus, continuing the initial project, now we aimed to study for the first time the Gymnarchidae family and promote additional studies in Notopteridae and Arapaimidae families. Therefore, convencional (Giemsa staining and C-banding) and molecular cytogenetics approaches will be used, including the chromosomal mapping of different repetitive DNA sequences, comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), and whole chromosome painting (WCP) with probes obtained from chromosome microdissection procedures. Additionally, a significant step in the exploration of genetic variability present in Notopteridae and Arapaimidae families will be given, using DART-Seq (Diversity Array Technology Sequencing), highly informative and still unprecedented among fishes. Allied to this project there is a team of researchers from 05 different countries, with all 05 continents being represented, joining efforts to research what is being proposed and ensuring its achievement. The data to be obtained will form a solid basis for the continuation of studies with other Osteoglossiformes families allowing a wide cytogenetic approach in this order, its genomic diversity and biodiversity. The investigative model fostered by this group, associated with its wide geographical distribution and its basal position in fish phylogeny, make it an important object for systematic and evolutionary studies, allowing measuring the impact of the fragmentation of the continents in their evolutionary history.
