Abstract

The proposed 5-year research program relates to the exceptional discovery potential of Specialty Glass Fibers (SGF), an innovative line of research where Chemistry, Physics, and Materials sciences converge, bringing transformative concepts, new application paradigms, and technological impact to a wide range of knowledge-users. The objective of the research consists of the long-term study of SGFs, and of the interrelation between Materials science and Chemistry, that imparts creativity and innovation to this line of inquiry which is at the heart of many recent high-impact research advances in telecommunications, health care and environmental monitoring. This research program will involve the training of highly qualified personnel in the field of chemistry, materials sciences, physics, optics and photonics within research units that raise the standard for best practice.
