The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is an inflammatory condition that affects the whole body and represents a serious threat. Endotoxemia, sepsis and its complications (septic shock and multiple organ failure) are the major cause of death in intensive care units worldwide, despite recent major technological advances. Lack of knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms of this condition and the aging population are facts related to this situation. In recent years, we settled in our laboratories an experimental model to unravel the mechanisms involved in immune responses to the endotoxin challenge more specifically we assessed the participation of gaseous neuromodulators (nitric oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide) in the central nervous system. We have published articles in peer reviewed journals and chapters in books; facts that reinforce recognition of the world front scientific community to our work. This proposal aims to improve the efficiency of our work, enabling the increase in the number of students and researchers involved, expanding knowledge about the nervous, hormonal, cardiovascular, thermoregulatory and behavioral changes that take place during and after experimental systemic inflammation induced by endotoxin.
