Ultrahigh capacity coherent optical sistems


The main idea for a future long term project is the design of an experimental high capacity optical transmission system based on fully coherent receivers. For that, it is necessary to study and develop ideas that allow for the construction of an optical link with the appropriate infrastructure (transmitter, receiver and communication channel) that will lead to transmission rates up to 135 Tb/s per fiber along hundreds to thousands of kilometers. In particular, this proposal aims for techniques that can be used as optical sources for such a system based on optical frequency combs and posterior formation of superchannels. The superchannel concept has already been considered to take part in the so called emergent optical networks, which should present flexibility in both wavelength bandwidth and central wavelength depending on the demand. The main contribution of this proposal is to evaluate the use of such sources under phase locking before reception, which could ease the requirements for demodulation of high spectral efficiency modulation formats, necessary step to approach the theoretical maximum transmission capacity of optical fibers. One of the possible outcomes of this investigation is the possibility of using semiconductor lasers without temperature control, decreasing power consumption by a factor of 10 in the demodulation process. In this way, following an international trend, there is a potential to conceive receivers that are more environmental friendly, resulting in reduced CO2 emissions related to telecommunications. (AU)
