Abstract

In Brazil, there are three species of Biomphalaria that are responsible for the transmission of Schistosoma mansoni, Biomphalaria glabrata, Biomphalaria tenagophila and Biomphalaria straminea. Species of Biomphalaria are capable of maintaining their self-integrity, mainly through their internal defense system composed of hemocytes and soluble proteins. Biomphalaria are capable of recognizing parasite molecules activating their phagocytic cells that may lead to their encasement and destruction. Concomitant parasite infections interfere with the internal defense system of the snail, therefore co-infection of different helminthes infections may be a useful tool in the snail defense mechanisms against parasites. Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the main cause of human eosinophilic meningitis. This parasite is capable of completing their larval development in B. glabrata. The infection by A. cantonensis in B. glabrata leads to an increment on hemocytes numbers and encasement of parasite larvae. Our general goal is the characterization of immune and proteomic changes in Biomphalaria glabrata throughout the infection cycle of Schistosoma mansoni and Angiostrongylus cantonensis, in both simple infection and in co-infection, in order to find molecular markers for helminthic specificity to snail infection. Understanding the parasite - intermediary host interactions has a high biomedical importance, since without snails, there would be no infection, therefore, it is important to understand what factors allow the development of the parasite in the intermediary host.
