Emergent phenomena in strongly correlated systems

Abstract

My research has always focused on the behavior of strongly correlated systems. This project furthers this line of research. It can be divided into big groups, according to the physical characteristics of the systems of interest: correlated homogeneous ("clean") and disordered systems. In the former case, we are interested in bosonic or fermionic systems, showing competition between localizing and delocalizing tendencies (as in Mott transitions), with emergent properties of superfluidity/superconductivity and topological properties. In the latter, we want to investigate emergent properties of disordered systems that show strong correlations. In particular, during the visit, we will be interested in two "emergent phenomena", one related to a disordered system and the other to a clean one. First, we want to investigate disorder effects in the spin-1 Heisenberg chain. In particular, we will use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) in order to verify in an unbiased way the phase diagram proposed for this chain, as well as the proposal of the existence of phases with an emergent SU(3) symmetry. Furthermore, we also want to investigate the possible existence of non-trivial surface states in the p-wave Kondo-Heisenberg chains, possible candidates for strongly interacting topological phases in dimensions higher than 1.
