Genome-wide association study for seed protein and fatty acids in soybean

Soybeans are major source of protein and vegetable oil in the world being grown commercially for food and feed. Soybean oil contains approximately 11, 4, 23, 54, and 8% palmitic (16:0), stearic (18:0), oleic (18:1), linoleic (18:2), and linolenic (18:3) acid, respectively. The amounts and relative proportions of each fatty acid are important factors, as they affect the flavor, stability, and nutritional value of the oil. Traditional methods of soybean breeding have been successful in increasing the protein and oil content of soybean seeds. However, the negative correlations between protein versus yield seeds and oil content, has hampered the simultaneous increase of the yield seeds and protein content. Techniques including the partial sequencing of genomes and its reduction of complexity have been employed for assisted selection of crop breeding. The discovery of markers with genome-wide coverage, as the SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism), has provided useful results for genomic selection due to the high quality of its data, the co dominant inheritance and the reduction in the cost of the sample because of automation. The objective of this work is the validation and discovery of SNP loci, by using the Illumina Infinium BeadChip technique and then after, we are going to use association mapping of traits related to fatty acids (previously studied) and protein content (not studied) in 100 soybean accessions in Brazilian field conditions. We intend to provide and identify useful markers to increase soybean oil quality and protein content in breeding programs. (AU)
