It is observed worldwide the progressive increase in the number of elderly people as a result of improving the living conditions of the population and technological advances in health care. This process has led to changes in morbidity and mortality profiles, an increase of chronic diseases, including dementia. Caring for people with dementia is a burden on families. However, the recognition of disease symptoms may decrease due to stress of care and contribute to the quality of life of patients and their families. In Brazil, the evaluation for dementia screening is part is part of the Primary Care Booklet Health of the Elderly. However, it is rarely performed in Primary Care (PC). Many professionals report that they do not feel prepared and not trained to do so. This study aims to evaluate the educational needs of doctors and nurses of the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in caring for dementia. Its specific objectives are: 1) To evaluate the reliability of the instrument Health Care of Dementia: the vision of Primary Care through the stability of (test-retest); 2) Identify the knowledge and attitudes of doctors and nurses in relation to screening, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of dementia; 3) identify the educational needs of physicians and nurses caring for dementia and 4) Propose a Permanent Education Program in Health (PEP) for these professionals within the PC. It is hoped that this study will identify training needs of doctors and nurses PC in caring for dementia and thus support the development of PEP programs that enable them to provide quality care.
