Extraction and vehiculation of active compounds from industrial waste Acerola and Camu Camuin natural polymer based films produced by tape casting

Abstract

The pulping of acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC) and Camu-Camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a very common process that allows the pulp / juice to be commercialized throughout all year to different regions enabling higher consumption of these fruits rich in nutrients. However, this process forms a residue (fibrous material composed of seed and peel), which is currently discarded or used in small proportions as fertilizer or animal feed. These residues have high concentrations of active compounds such as vitamin C, phenolics, anthocyanins, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, carotenoids, among others. In this context, this project will aim the extraction of active components of industrial residue and development of a vehicle system of those through oral disintegrating films, which are easy to administer, present precise dosage and rapid bioavailability. Acerola and camu-camu residues will be dried at 60 and 50º C, respectively, and a powder will be obtained from grinding. Both will be characterized in relation to water activity, moisture, water retention capacity, solubility, color, pH, vitamin C, phenolic and proanthocyanidins to study drying effect in active compounds. For the extraction of vitamin C and other active compounds, alcohol 70% and water will be evaluated as solvents. The extract with a higher concentration of active compounds will be incorporated into oral disintegrating films produced by tape casting technique using hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose and starch as macromolecules. The films will be characterized in thickness, mechanical properties, contact angle, moisture, disintegration time, surface pH, color, opacity, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Release profile and stability of natural active of films will also be evaluated for the different macromolecules studied. (AU)
