Prematurity: maternal perception, maternal emotional health, mother-infant interaction and child development

Abstract

Actions related to maternity are influenced by many factors and, among them, the maternal emotional health and premature birth. These conditions may affect the quality of the mother infant interaction and consequently the denouement of development. The mother's perception of the hospitalized baby's condition can also affect them. In this project we intend to identify which factors influence the maternal perception of infant hospitalization condition in the NICU and, also, analyze the influence of prematurity, of maternal mental health and perception of mothers on the baby's condition when hospitalized on child development and mother interaction baby. For this will be developed two studies. The Study 1 aims to investigate the relationship between the perception of mothers of infants hospitalized in neonatal ITU and the sociodemographic and contextual variables of the mother and baby. Participate in 80 mothers of premature infants who are hospitalized for at least three days and no more than 15 days in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of the partner institutions (Maternity Santa Isabel / Bauru/SP, Clinical Hospital/Botucatu/SP and University Hospital / Dourados/MS). They answer a questionnaire to collect sociodemographic and maternal perception scale of the condition of the baby hospitalized in NICUs and UCI (EPMCBI) that will be built for this study. The objectives of the Study 2 are: 1) Describe and assess the development of babies, the three and nine months of age, considering the emotional health of mothers of preterm babies and at term; 2) Describe and assess the mother-infant interaction, at three and nine months of age, considering the emotional health of mothers of preterm babies and at term; 3) Describe and assess the development of babies at three, six, nine and 12 months of age, considering the interaction between mothers and premature babies and at term and, 4) To evaluate the relationship of the interaction between mother and premature baby with her perception of the baby's condition when interned at NICU or UCI. Will participate in this study 300 mothers and their babies, 150 at term infants and 150 premature babies who frequent the follow-up programs of development of babies in the first year of life of two psychological services, of public universities in the states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. To evaluate the maternal emotional health will be used the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), the Stress Index-Short Form Parental (ISP-FC) and Trait Anxiety Inventory-State (STAI). For evaluation of child development will be used to BSID-III - Bayley Scales of Infant Development III. For evaluation of maternal perception of the hospitalized baby's condition will be used Maternal Perception Scale of the Hospitalized Baby's Condition in NICUs and UCI (EPMCBI). The mother-infant interaction will be filmed and subsequently analyzed using specific protocols to encode the interactive behavior of the mother and baby. Mothers and their premature babies shall compose the Preterm Group (GP) and mothers of at term babies with no previous history of hospitalization shall compose the at term to the Group (GT). Babies of the two groups will have their assessed development and mother-infant interaction will be filmed for 10 minutes at three, six, nine and 12 months. In the evaluations of three and nine months, data on emotional health will be collected with their mothers. Descriptive statistical analyzes, comparative, correlational and inferential will be made. The results may indicate maternal or baby variables that require protective actions to modify and reduce the negative impact of the same on the mother-infant interaction and child development. (AU)
