Abstract

Identifying culturally unbiased cognitive markers for Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a key topic worldwide and particularly in Latin America. Towards this aim, we are planning continue to investigate, via a collaborative research agenda, the contributions of VSTMB to AD diagnosis. Results from initial studies carried out in Brazil have confirmed that the task is not significantly influenced by age, education and is indeed affected in AD. By means of the present collaboration we are planning to fully incorporate this methodology into our existing assessment protocols to maximize the strength of our diagnostic procedures to identify pre-clinical AD. This will require a thorough exchange program between the involved parts wherein existing experience in the field will be shared. We have developed a comprehensive agenda designed to achieve the following aims. 1. To introduce a novel cognitive marker for dementia to clinical research practice in Brazil and the UK; 2. To unveil the links between cognitive marker and biomarkers for dementia; 3. To develop a novel cognitive biomarker for AD; 4. To strengthen the collaboration links between the Cognitive Behavioral Neurology Group at USP and the Neurophysiology and Dementia group from Heriot-Watt University; 5. To foster the academic development of young researchers via teaching and learning activities across the involved groups. (AU)
