Globally, the quality of care and patient safety are concerns in the health services. The surgical site infection (SSI) is a frequent complication that can affect the patient undergoing surgical anesthesia, which causes increased morbidity, mortality and hospital costs as well as the emotional and physical suffering of the patient. The movement entitled "Safe Surgery Saves Lives" of the World Health Organization, reducing the risk of surgical site infection is one of ten objectives for the safety of surgical care. Thus, the present study has as main objective to investigate the incidence of surgical site infection and the independent effect of hypothermia and hyperglycemia on the incidence of this type of infection in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. This is a cohort study, which will be conducted in private hospital major philanthropic. The calculation of sample size is 475 participants. The results generated by the study will support the decision making by health professionals to implement actions aimed at the prevention and control of surgical site infection, with emphasis on possible measures for the control of hypothermia and hyperglycemia during the perioperative period, which can encourage improvements in the care provided to the surgical patients and lower costs for health services. Another relevant aspect is the production of knowledge in an area with few studies, mainly in the national context. It should be noted that the proposal presented enables the development of two doctoral theses.
