The govern of conflict in the production of the contemporary city: transnational perspectives

Abstract

Rosana Pinheiro-Machado (VR - Visiting Researcher) will join the Thematic Project "Conflict management in the production of a contemporary city: São Paulo's experience" (2013/26116-5). The VR should engage and interact directly with the research fronts that deal with the issues that she has been researching and publishing. VR will collaborate to the training of junior researcher team and graduate students, as well as contribute to the internationalization of the project through the following activities: - Monitoring research and participating in seminars and workshops. - Organizing thematic seminars around the themes and theoretical issues addressed by VP' current research. The goal is to circulate empirical, thematic and theoretical references about urban contexts in the global North or other cities in the global South. - Discussing the undergraduate and graduate students' research, participating in their empirical incursions and promoting dialogue with their articles, dissertations and theses. Two graduate students from the University of Oxford will visit São Paulo in early 2017. The VP should organize an activity aimed at exchanging of experiences and empirical literature- Conducting a research on the case of the death of the street vendor, Carlos Braga. Outlining a paper that relies on dialogue and co-authoring with project members. The paper investigates the story of the worker who was killed by a military police officer in 2014 with a head shot. It is an emblematic case on the imagery of marginality and Brazilian "dangerous classes" in the 21st century Brazil. The objective is to interview his colleagues and family to reassemble this extreme case about policing and the development of legal exception mechanisms. - Elaborating a book proposal about an edited collection of essays on "criminalization of urban informal markets". The book will gather articles by researchers of the thematic project and other parties to be published in English by Pelgrave Press. Activities within the PPGS, Social Research Laboratory, Department of Sociology, USP- Offering a Module "A new form of organization of social movements?" to PPGS students from University of São Paulo. The course will emphasize the so-called "the newest social movements" to think the contemporary social movements that have unfolded in major world cities in the 21st century. It focuses on (1) mass protests and (2) urban occupations. By discussing contemporary, national and international literature, the goal of the module is to introduce a transnational perspective on the treatment of research questions about the urban resistance movements that have occurred São Paulo and other Brazilian cities in recent years. Students will debate whether there is a new form or tactics of the social movements at present days. Other forms of collaboration with the PPGS:- Contribution to in the delimitation of graduate's students research projects, contributing to the narrowing down of their topics and bibliographic references- Participation in vivas, committee of masters and doctoral thesis- Regular participation in events, lectures and seminars offered by PPGS. Activities within the Doctorate in Social Sciences, Brazil-China area at UNICAMP- Teaching the workshop "China: modernity and neoliberalism" for doctoral students of the program- Participation in the research meetings of CNPq group study and China and the BRICS University Network.
