Development of adsorbents from yeast biomass residue from industrial fermentation processes to remove emerging contaminants from water and effluents

Abstract

Among the challenges of the millennium established by the United Nations (UN) the access to water and the implication of its quality on the environment and life is one of the main concerns. The search for materials and/or processes capable to remove the contaminants from aqueous medium, particularly emerging contaminants (ECs) whose actions on life are little known, and its removal will be performed by the most water treatment systems, is a task that requires the resources and researchers in the search for alternatives cost effective and efficient. Consonant with this search, this project aims to develop adsorbents from yeast biomass residues from industrial fermentation processes to remove emerging contaminants from water and wastewater. Therefore, this project aims to carry out three main essays: A) To improve the biomass conversion from industrial fermentation processes in activated carbon yeast (CAL) and evaluate this material as adsorbent for ECs present in aqueous medium; B) To employ ferromagnetic nanoparticles material obtained with yeast biomass (BL-Fe3O4) as adsorbent for ECs from aqueous medium; C) To obtain and characterize the adsorbent with ferromagnetic nanoparticles prepared with the activated carbon produced from yeast biomass particles CAL (CAL-NM).
