The enormous growth in worldwide IP traffic that occurred in the last five years, mostly due to the rapid diffusion of multimedia devices, is determining a deep change in the optical telecommunication system's scenario, whose backbone is composed by high-capacity optical networks. The fast evolution and diversification of network services and applications is increasing the need for scalable and dynamic high-capacity systems, efficiently adaptable to highly variable traffic conditions. The legacy of actual technology solutions is established, but not sufficient to satisfy the new market requirements that are ultimately being defined. Therefore, it is important for actual communication systems to have a smooth transition to next generation networks. In this context, the aim of the present proposal is to discuss, design and develop advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms for high-capacity WDM flexible optical networks applications, aimed at maximizing the capacity and efficiency in advanced WDM systems (channel rate e400 Gb/s), overcoming the technological limits imposed by current state of the art solutions. The main lines in which the project is structured are: *study of emerging scenarios for next generation high-capacity optical networks; *definition of the main system requirements and limitations for each of the different identified scenarios; *study and development of advanced DSP algorithms to overcome the current limitations and maximize the system performance, based on the specified requirements; *experimental validation of the proposed solutions in the laboratory infrastructure offered by the host institution.
