CAREER AND POST- CAREER BETWEEN BRAZILIAN OLYMPIC ATHLETES

Abstract

The amateurism in sports was, until the 1980s, one of the pillars of Olympism and the Olympic movement, determining a sports competition model and athlete should be devoted to sports for the sake of training and competition and without receiving in return any material goods or financial for their results. From a professionalization Olympics movement occurred from the 1980s to professional athletes became inevitable generating profound changes not only in the exercise of athlete's profession, but also in the constitution of the identity of this professional who has a short productive history and an early retirement, compared to other professions. Called career transition the athlete's retirement has profound consequences in their lives used to have social visibility, harassment and public recognition for their achievements, unusual to average citizens. If the professional is the possibility of a career in sport as in any other profession one must consider that in other specialties is the retirement for length of service, following labor laws that guarantee income for the pension system. The career transition for athletes involves the beginning of a new career or taking a second job which starts at a time when the average person already sees the height of the productive career. (AU)
