Abstract

Human T-cell lymphotropic viruses (HTLV-1, HTLV-2, and HIV-1) share the same routes of virus transmission, but have different pathogenicity. The HTLV-1 is the etiological agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and tropical spastic paraparesis or HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). The HTLV-2 although not associated with specific diseases was detected in some cases similar to TSP/HAM. The HIV-1 is responsible for the AIDS pandemic. These viruses could infect the same individual, and the coinfection could accelerate or delay the development of virus related diseases. The HIV-1/HTLV-1 accelerates the onset of AIDS, while the HIV/HTLV-2 retards the development of AIDS. Several factors from virus and host have been implicated in such diseases progression. The present study aims to search for the frequency of some genetic markers of prognostic value in HIV-1 infection, and HIV-1/HTLV-1 and HIV-1/HTLV-2 coinfections. The markers that will be investigated were as follows: HIV-1 tropism, CCR5 delta32, SNPs in IL28B, IL17A, SDF-1-3'A and CCR2-V64I genes, and profile of cytokines Th1/Th2/Th17 and chemokines, as well, defective HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 provirus, genotypes of the transactivating protein of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 (Tax1 and Tax2), and proviral load quantification (PVL) of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2. The results obtained could be useful in the future in monitoring and treatment of patients. (AU)
