Design of new catalytic systems for the biorefinery

Aiming to diminish the society dependence on oil, there has been a significant raise in the scientific interest for renewable sources of carbon and energy. Lignocellulosic biomass, composed by ca. 75 % of carbohydrates, appears as the most reliable renewable source of carbon due to its availability. The high processing cost of renewable sources is a limiting factor on the stabilishment of biorefineries. Catalyst performance has a main role in establishing a chemical process, drastically affecting the product final cost. Therefore, there is a real necessity of developing heterogeneous catalysts more efficient than the existing ones. In this proposal, new heterogeneous catalysts will be developed aiming to increase the biomassa conversion, providing more sustainable processes, as well as seeking fundamental knowledge on the reaction and their mechanisms. This proposal covers all the three phases of biomass conversion: hydrolysis, production of platform molecules and their conversion into industrially important compounds. The proposal is divided in three sections: (i) Study of the mechanism of solid biomass deconstruction using organic solvents and water as co-solvent; (ii) design of bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of cellulose and glucose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF); (iii) Conversion of 5-hydroxymetylfurfural into 2,5-dimethyl furandicarboxylate.
