This project aims at providing long term monitoring of the underwater soundscape in two Marine Conservation Units (MCU) situated by the center of Sao Paulo State coastline, the State marine Park of Laje de Santos and the Ecological Station Tupinambás. The monitoring process will be carried out by means of autonomous underwater acoustic monitoring equipment named OceanPod, developed by our laboratory. The equipment autonomy, in this Project, will be fixed at 4 months, with 5 missions, totalizing 20 months of continuous monitoring, in each MCUs. Database analysis will allow: obtaining a first knowledge about the underwater soundscape of Sao Paulo State coast, the variation of sound pressure levels with time, a possible special correlation between MUCs, the identification of main sound sources. Moreover, it will supply important information about anthropogenic impacts, mainly the presence of small boats, offering additional help for management of the MCUs. To that end, time-frequency for different time scales, and visualization algorithms will be developed and optimized in order to deal with this great database, as well as algorithms to detect acoustic events of short duration (presence of cetaceans and small boats). Finally, the project will also contribute to enhance underwater acoustic technology through the development of an acoustic release. This equipment will allow streamlining and extending OceanPods use, as far as its installation and recuperation will no more depend on scuba diving. (AU)
