The objective of the present collaborative research proposal is to perform the design, analysis, fabrication, and characterization of two classes of new metamaterial-based devices for radio-frequency. (RF)/microwave and optical applications, with unprecedented performance. In the RF/microwave regime, a previous transient (time-domain) analysis (carried out by this group) of microwave pulse propagation in periodic media will be extended to metamaterials exhibiting simultaneously negative refraction and anisotropy. The objective is to increase the degrees of freedom available in such dispersion-engineered metamaterials to harness new effects such as pulse compression and amplitude enhancement. This transient analysis will be complemented by the development of a new metamaterial homogenization procedure capable of correctly reproducing causal responses for any frequency of interest and enabling the simulation of metamaterial-based devices at the "macroscale". Moreover, pertinent v physical effects such as near-zero refractive indices, slow wave propagation, and high-order dispersion effects will also be investigated. (AU)
