Abstract

Evolutionary processes and mechanisms of phenotypic diversity represent a central topic of Evolutionary Biology. Two major categories comprise investigations on shape evolution, ecomorphology and evolutionary development (Evo-Devo), but the concrete integration of these dimensions is effectively consolidated with the establishment of the Eco-Evo-Devo field, when the environment is recognized both and selector and inducer of phenotypic diversity. The present proposal adopts this integrative approach to concatenate functional and temporal dimensions of morphological diversification in representatives of the Brazilian herpetofauna. The proposal is organized in three complementary axes. The first one combines research projects focusing on the morphological diversification in Lissamphibia and Lepidosauria, organized according to three principal approaches: Ecomorphology, Evo-Devo and Eco-Evo-Devo. Ecomorphological studies will be implemented using a broad taxonomic scale, combining morphometric and meristic data with ecological information. Research in Evo-Devo, in turn, will investigate processes and mechanisms of embryo or larval development likely associated to morphological diversification in specific lineages, by sequencing of coding and regulatory regions of Hox genes and evaluation of developmental series. Finally, studies in Eco-Evo-Devo will manipulate environmental conditions during the development and evaluate the morphology and performance of the resulting phenotypes. This proposal also has a second axis, which is focused on short-duration courses to train students in Evo-Devo and Eco-Evo-Devo, which will be taught by renowned researchers in the field. Finally, access to the concepts inherent to Evo-Devo and Eco-Evo-Devo will be also enhanced by publication of a popular science book dedicated to undergrad students and high school professors. (AU)
