Contribution of Precision Agriculture technology on the sustainability of sugar cane production for energy

Abstract

The production of biofuels is justified only if their economic and environmental impacts are favourable in relation to sources of similar energy, and if there are real benefits to all segments of society directly involved. One of the innovations that should be incorporated into the production of sugarcane, seeking greater sustainability and profitability of the system, is the Precision Agriculture - PA an interdisciplinary subject. The purpose of this project is to develop and adapt technologies enabling to increase the use of PA technologies via two specific objectives, OE1 - Determine how the apparent soil electrical conductivity and reflectance analysis of soil and plant contribute to the mapping of the nutritional status of the soil and the plant. OE2 - Investigate the spatial variability of sugarcane yield using soil parameters, biometric and quality of the plant, as well as to contribute to the development of mathematical models and/or with existing models, aiming to simulating the temporal behaviour of sugarcane. It is expected by the end of this project: i) using soil and plant sensors "on-the-go", obtain a methodology that allows direct sampling of soil in order to produce thematic maps compatible with results of soil sampling conducted in dense grids in the area at significantly lower cost; ii) contribute to the scientific knowledge in understanding the spatial variability of sugarcane and the factors involved in its measurement to allow possible interventions during the crop development; iii) consolidate the research developed by our research group, generating spatial and temporal information of sugarcane production, in order to contribute to studies in different areas of knowledge about the behaviour of this crop under different growing conditions.
