Analysis and Management of Modern Distribution Systems Using State Estimation and Smart Meters.

Abstract

Although the electrical energy industry exists for more than a century, in the recent years the electrical energy distribution segment has been marked by strong technological, economic and structural changes. Among the most striking technological advances in this industry, the intense use of renewable energy, as well as monitoring and communication systems can be highlighted. Thus, the energy meters that were originally applied only for billing the customer, will provide voltage and power measurements at sample rates of a few minutes, creating an appropriate environment for the development of methods aimed at optimal management of modern distribution systems. As a strong indication of this trend, the Brazilian government through its regulatory agency intends to have installed about 63 million of smart meters by the end of 2021, and some Brazilian utilities have already begun to install these devices little over a year. In this context, this research project aims to develop techniques for the analysis and the optimized management of modern distribution systems based on state estimation methodologies and measurements from smart meters. It will be developed specific techniques for state estimation in primary and secondary systems. In addition, these techniques will form the basis for the development of network management functions such as Volt-Var control, detection of commercial losses and network reconfiguration. (AU)
