Refurbishment and expansion of IPq-HCFMUSP biorepository

Abstract

Different laboratory techniques have contributed significantly to the identification of molecular markers related to the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders, with applications to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and determine variables related to prognosis and therapeutic response. The use of these techniques is fundamental to improve the quality and international competitiveness of research projects. Therefore, the collection and storage of biological samples and the integrated clinical information are priorities in the strategic planning of research in our institution.Biological samples obtained from studies conducted in Psychiatric Institute -HCFMUSP (IPq) are now stored in non-standard manner in vulnerable areas of common use or not, managed in a decentralized way by the laboratories. There is a need to manage the institutional physical spaces, standardize procedures and ensure operational and safety conditions for proper storage of these biological samples over time.Translational research initiatives applied to Neuroscience allowed the setting up laboratories on IPq with equipment purchase, researchers training and support staff acting in areas like genetics and molecular biology, psychophysiology, neurochemistry, neuroimaging and neuropathology. Strategically, we want to invest in research with clinical-laboratory interface adding distinct analytical technologies to our important clinical patrimony. In this direction, some lines are already well established between our research groups. The subspecialties involved in clinical and laboratory research in IPq:Psychiatry on childhood and adolescence; Common mental disorders in adults; Geriatric Psychiatry and Translational Psychiatry.
