Ecological management of cover crops to weed control under no-tillage of vegetable

Abstract

The conservationist agriculture involves methods of minimum soil disturbance, permanent protection of soil surface and crop rotation, agriculture technical that provide several environmental benefits, reduce production cost and improve soil fertility and crop yield. The cover crops are frequently used for crop rotation and straw production on soil surface to do no-till with high quality. An important moment to no-till success is the instant of cover crop termination to straw formation on soil surface. Normally, in this moment, the growers often use the herbicide application to kill cover crops. However, there is, now a days, a crescent number of grower that crave eliminate herbicide in the crop production, in the case of organic grower, or even reduce the chemical inputs in your farms, fact that leads to necessity of technological development to kill cover crops and management weeds without herbicides. So, the propose of this project is evaluate winter cover crops as well as summer cover crops worthy of death with the 'roller crimper' action. To generate contrast in the experiment it will use the gliphosate herbicide in all cover crops treatments to kill chemically the plants. Nevertheless, the experimental design will be a randomized block with the treatments designed in a split plot, with cover crops species (5) as the main treatments and with and without gliphosate spraying (2) as a second factor, with four replicate. So, for this purpose will be study the efficiency of this species in growth vigor, yield of dry biomass to straw production on soil surface and the establishment and growth of weeds in the vegetable grown. In this way, we will develop ecological technique to produce straw on the soil surface and control weeds under no-till of vegetable crops. (AU)
