Abstract

Five main activities are planned for the three-month period in Campinas: (1) consultation of archival and bibliographical collections at UNICAMP and USP (e.g. Obadiah Rich Collection, Arquivo Edgard Leuenroth, UNICAMP; Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia, Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros and the Biblioteca Brasiliana, USP, the Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo). The consultation is necessary for the revision and completion of the book script "The birth of Brazilian Amazonian cultures". (2) Presentation of two seminars based on scientific project (outlined in the attached proposal) at IFCH/UNICAMP. A rough indication of topics will be (a) Historical transformations of riverine societies in the Amazon c. 1300-1870. (c) Contemporary anthropological approaches to the ribeirinhos, quilombolas and indigenas na Amazônia. (3) two one day workshops with the participation of researchers at junior and senior levels towards the end of the three-month visit (a) Historical and anthropological approaches to the transformations of Indigenous identities in Brazil, (b) Past Lessons for Present Challenges: the value of historical understanding in the contemporary Amazônia. (4) Participation in research centre activities in UNICAMP (Centro de Estudos Rurais, CERES, Centro de Pesquisa em Etnologia Indígena, CPEI) and USP (Centro de Estudo Ameríndios, CEstA, and Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia, MAE) and discussions with colleagues in both locations. (5) Debate at IFCH/UNICAMP on the book "Rebellion on the Amazon: The Cabanagem, Race and Popular Culture in the North of Brazil 1798-1850" (2010, Cambridge) with lead discussant Nádia Farage. A Portuguese translation of this book is due to be published in 2016 by Editora da Unicamp. The debate will also act as a launch for Brazilian readers. (AU)
