Development of chitosan beads with drugs and silver nanoparticles

The septic arthritis and the osteomyelitis are orthopedic conditions which affect horses with high occurrence leading to lacks of performance in these animals. The conventional types of treatment for the orthopedic conditions are systemic antibiotic therapy, intra articular injection of antibiotics and regional perfusion with antibiotics. However, in conventional methods, during the drug clearance process, a momentary rise occurs in the organism which can reach toxic levels, decreasing drastically after a while, so high concentrations are necessary to reach the purpose. In this manner, the purpose of this project is the development and evaluation of the antimicrobial effect of chitosan spheres with the antimicrobial agents (aminoglycosides and silver nanoparticles) for controlled clearance system. The physicochemical characterisations will be performed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. The absortion and clearance profile of the antimicrobial agents will be analized by using the ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) technique. The antimicrobial evaluation will be realized by the disk-diffusion Method for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In the end it is intended to develop a clearance drug system as an alternative way to treat the orthopedic infections that affect horses. (AU)
