Degradation of organic contaminants by heterogeneous fenton process mediated by modified magnetites and iron mining residues


This project proposes the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of the catalytic activity of magnetite modified with titanium, copper and zinc and evaluation of iron mining residue as catalysts for use in the heterogeneous process Fenton and photo-Fenton. It is proposed to study the synthesis conditions aiming an efficient and stable material that can be applied to the degradation of organic contaminants as drug residues. The structural characteristics of the synthesized materials will be studied by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and especially by photoelectron spectroscopy induced by x-rays (XPS) aiming to correlate the activity as a catalyst in Fenton reactions to its structure and surface characteristics. XPS analyzes will be applied to the freshly prepared materials and after use in the degradation process in order to evaluate the surface changes. This technique will provide important information on the characteristics and structural and electronic properties of the materials surface synthesized as the concentration of these species (Fe, Ti and Cu) and the chemical environment in the network of Fe3O4 systems and their relationship with the photocatalytic efficiency.
