Relativistic nuclear collisions at the LHC

The research project described in this document proposes to perform research on high energynuclear physics within the ALICE collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of theEuropean Centre of Nuclear Research (CERN). The proposed research program intends toanalyze the physics data of the experiment in association with phenomenological studies, while,on the other side, collaborating with the other ALICE member institutes in Sao Paulo on theirproject on instrumentation for high energy nuclear physics. The analysis topics to which this project will be devoted are the so called "hard probes",and among them the focus will be on jets and high energy photons. These are the same topicsthat will be covered on the phenomenological investigations to be taken in collaboration withresearchers in theoretical physics. The instrumentation project is already ongoing in a collaboration between several institutionsof the State of Sao Paulo, lead by the Relativistic Heavy Ion Group (GRIPER) of thePhysics Institute of the University of Sao Paulo (USP). The main purpose of this instrumentationproject is to upgrade the read-out electronics of the main ALICE experiment subsystem, and theUFABC can contribute to the testing phase, to take place in the next thirty months. One of the goals of the participation in this instrumentation project is to be a starter projectfor the development of an infrastructure for the instrumentation in high energy nuclear physicsas a new facility at UFABC. This also has a broader and longer term goal for this infrastructureto be the base for the participation in future projects that may last for the post-LHC era. (AU)
