Meta-heuristics for reliable communication in large scale wireless sensor and actuator networks

Abstract

The Wireless Sensor (and Actuator) Networks (WSN/WSANs) may be composed by hundreds to thousands of low cost sensor nodes with finite energy supply and reduced communication, storage and processing capabilities. In the literature, one may find a great number of routing protocols primarily concerned with the energy efficiency of sensor nodes. However they may not provide adequate data delivery reliability required by strict applications, such as natural disaster and border monitoring. This problem rises up in large scale WSN/WSANs in which the large number of concurrently transmissions reduces the data delivery rate. In this project we propose reliable and energy efficient routing solutions for large scale WSN/WSANs with dynamic topology. The solutions developed in this project will take combinatorial optimization and bio-inspired algorithms into account aiming at the balance between energy consumption, latency and data message delivery reliability.
