Modulation of the Eucalyptus grandis chloroplast redox status by CO2 stimulus


According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, it is predicted that the global CO2 atmospheric concentration reaches an average of 985 ppm in the year of 2100. C3 plants will probably be positively affected in this new worldwide scenario. However, the induction of the carbon fixation metabolism may alter the activity and expression of enzymes involved in the photosynthetic electron transport chain. As a consequence, a higher synthesis of reactive oxygen species may occur. The present proposal aims to investigate the modulation of redox status within Eucalyptus grandis chloroplasts upon growth at CO2 enriched atmosphere. We plan to use proteomics approaches to monitor the expression of genes involved in carbon fixation and those involved in the control and response to oxidative stress. Carbohydrates content and activity of antioxidant enzymes will also be evaluated for plants grown under the same CO2 concentrations. By the end of the project, we expect to answer the following questions: 1) how the expression of genes involved in carbon fixation respond to atmospheric CO2 increase? 2) in what manner does the increase in the CO2 can lead to oxidative stress? 3) what are the genes preferentially induced in the antioxidant response upon growth at CO2 enriched atmosphere?
